Zo brutaal en heftig als de punk ooit de wereld van de popmuziek opschudde, zo manifesteerde het 'neo-expressionisme' zich iets later in de wereld van de beeldende kunst. De internationale kunst werd in de jaren zestig en zeventig gedomineerd door abstracte en conceptuele tendensen. Bijna niemand had verwacht dat de figuratieve, expressionistische schilderkunst met zo'n grote kracht terug zou komen.
Dat gebeurde wel, in meerdere landen tegelijk, en nergens op zo'n brede schaal als in (toenmalig West-)Duitsland. Daar ontstonden in diverse steden levendige centra waar jonge kunstenaars in wisselwerking en competitie met elkaar rauwe, provocerende en humoristische schilderijen maakten. Sommigen werden daarbij direct geïnspireerd door het historische Duitse expressionisme, anderen beoefenden met onverholen sarcasme de zogenaamde 'bad painting'.
